Foothill High School. The news dropped a rock through my stomach. “That’s where my kids go! Stephen may have known her.”

“Could be. Although she apparently didn’t hang around with the best of crowds.”

How tactful of Chetterling. Stephen didn’t hang around with the best of crowds either, and he knew it.

I hung up the phone, my jitters reinforced. Selfish though it may be to think of my own family’s needs, I hoped Jane Doe turned out to be someone other than Trenise. I would even choose to face another round of photographs and drawing over discovering the victim may have been an acquaintance, even a friend, of Stephen’s.

Whatever happened, I’d now be in town longer than expected. I considered turning around and going home, then decided against it. First, because I’d told Chetterling I’d remain near the office, and second, because I was curious to pick up Gerri’s tape. All the same, a voice within me nagged that I was acting the terrible mother. How much time had I spent with Kelly in the past two days? I knew she was happy hanging out with Erin. All the same . . .

To assuage my guilt, I called her at Dave’s, explaining that I’d be gone longer than anticipated. Hard-beat music wafted over the phone, no doubt from Erin’s ever-going stereo.

“Okay, Mom, no problem,” Kelly practically sang amid background laughter from Erin.

So much for being missed.

At the front desk of the Sheriff’s Office, Beverly handed me the tape with a ragged smile. She, too, bore the effects of this never-ending case. “Need something to eat?” She indicated a table near the corner, spread with food.
